4 out of 5 stars Better to consult an attorney, but this book can help   August 18, 2010
    tall-latte (Sammamish, WA USA)
I personally think this topic is too complex to tackle without an attorney, but if you have already decided to do it yourself, then this book is a great resource and has lots of good information. Or even if you are using an attorney, this book can help you understand the process.

5 out of 5 stars Very helpful   August 5, 2010

This book has been very helpful and very comprehensive as I work to understand and administer my father's estate.

5 out of 5 stars Think of it as a guide of life and death   August 4, 2010
    Rizzo (Denver, CO)

Settling a loved one's estate and/or trust can be added stress during a time of mourning. And best thing to do is read and re-read this information before it is time. Prepare yourself, as there is so much here that doesn't specifically apply to trusts and estates. It is plain and simple knowledge for anyone.

If you are planning to set up estate planning or a trust, the help is here. I especially have a lot of confidence in the NOLO series books. The information is concise, understandable and written in layman's terms. A chapter provides info on understanding a Will and what to do if there is not will. How to handle taxes is another important concern to many.

The NOLO series law books contain more information than one could even believe to ask about. The info is easy to find, and the pages are presented with large font headings, shaded boxes, plenty of white space for note taking, easily identifiable chapters for locating what you need. I like the small graphics that give the reader a hint on importance or reference to charts or other shaded areas.

If you do not plan to prepare a trust, or execute estate planning, this book is helpful regardless. .....Rizzo

4 out of 5 stars Great book to have in your library   July 23, 2010
Jenny J.J.I. (That Lives in Carolinas)
I haven't been in a position like this yet but this book will take you through the entire process-from the time of death to the final closing of the estate. "The Executor's Guide: Settling a Loved One's Estate or Trust" is the definitive instruction manual for anyone administering an estate under a will. Featuring step-by-step instructions, worksheets, checklists, and timetables.

"The Executor's Guide: Settling a Loved One's Estate or Trust" is interesting and informative because it explains the full range of roles and responsibilities of the executor, including reading the will, hiring and supervising the attorney, dealing with court proceedings, notifying those who are entitled to property, finding and valuing assets, settling with creditors, filing taxes, and distributing the assets. Some of the features I enjoy looking through was the glossary of essential terms, and a series of key questions to ask your attorney. Written in highly accessible language by an expert in the field. I recommend this guide because it's user-friendly and an essential resource for any family.

5 out of 5 stars Another great book from Nolo   July 22, 2010
    SMXSteve (Seattle)
I usually find books from Nolo Press to be very easy to understand and very informative. Like all the other books I have from them this one will probably come in handy one day (although we hope that day will never come it will). At least I will be better prepared. I am sure there is some information that some may feel was left out but I have yet to find that perfect contains everything book. When the time does come I feel confident I have enough information from this book to get me through that difficult time.
